Government Rallies Support for Victims After Deadly Harare-Nyamapanda Highway Bus Accident

The Government has expressed sorrow following the deadly BRB Luxury Coach accident in Mutoko that claimed 17 lives and left dozens injured along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway.

Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Itayi Ndudzo yesterday travelled to the crash site before visiting survivors admitted at Mutoko and Mudzi district hospitals.

The bus, which was travelling from South Africa to Blantyre in Malawi carrying Malawian passengers, overturned near the 167km peg on Tuesday after reportedly developing mechanical problems.

Government Assures Support to Victims

Speaking during the visit, Adv Ndudzo described the accident as heartbreaking and said Government departments were working together to assist affected families and survivors.

He said preliminary reports indicated that the bus developed a mechanical fault before the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn, trapping passengers inside.

Adv Ndudzo commended the efforts of the Civil Protection Unit, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other emergency services for responding swiftly and rescuing passengers from the wreckage.

He added that authorities were ensuring injured passengers received medical attention while consultations were also underway to support the family of the deceased driver, a Zimbabwean from Mudzi.

Injured Passengers Transferred for Further Treatment

Officials at Mudzi District Hospital said 35 injured passengers were admitted with varying injuries following the crash.

Some of the critically injured survivors have since been transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for specialised treatment, while several others are reportedly recovering well and could soon be discharged.

The accident victims were initially taken to Mutoko District Hospital and Mudzi District Hospital as emergency teams battled to attend to the large number of casualties.

Survivor Recalls Terrifying Moments

One of the survivors, Mr Enock Sisya from Malawi, said the bus had experienced breakdowns before the accident occurred.

He said he suspected the vehicle had been speeding before it overturned.

Sisya, who lost relatives in the tragedy, thanked the Zimbabwean Government and medical personnel for assisting injured passengers during the difficult period.

Calls for Road Safety Vigilance

Meanwhile, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe managing director Mr Munodawafa conveyed condolences to bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
