Several Malawians Killed In Limpopo Bus Crash
Several Malawians have reportedly died after a bus travelling from Gauteng to Malawi was involved in a horrific crash along the N1 highway near the Witvlag area in Limpopo Province, South Africa, on Thursday evening. Rescue teams were still attending to the scene late into the night as authorities closed the road to traffic.
The crash has once again raised concerns about safety along the busy N1 route, which is widely used by cross-border travellers heading to countries including Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
Authorities Confirm Fatal Crash
Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Mashed Ambati confirmed the accident in an official statement.
She said:
“We inform motorists of a serious road accident involving a Malawian bus travelling from Gauteng on the N1 near the Witvlag turn-off.”
Ambati added that emergency teams were still assessing the full scale of the tragedy.
“An unconfirmed number of fatalities has been reported, while the number of injured persons is still to be confirmed.”
She also confirmed that emergency personnel, police officers and traffic officials were deployed to the scene.
“The road is currently closed. Traffic officials, police, and emergency services are on the scene managing the situation.”
Motorists travelling through the area were urged to remain patient and use alternative routes while authorities cleared the scene.
Busy Highway Under Scrutiny
The N1 highway is one of Southern Africa’s busiest transport routes. It links South Africa with neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Malawi, Angola and Tanzania.
Thousands of buses, trucks and private vehicles use the route regularly, especially cross-border transport operators moving passengers between Gauteng and countries further north.
The Witvlag area, situated roughly 19 kilometres north of Louis Trichardt in the Soutpansberg region, is known for its mountainous terrain and winding roads.
Authorities in South Africa have repeatedly expressed concern over accidents involving long-distance buses on the N1. Fatigue among drivers has frequently been cited as a possible contributing factor in several deadly crashes involving cross-border transport operators.
