President Emmerson Mnangagwa quietly left Zimbabwe late Wednesday for Belarus on an unexplained trip. Consequently, he missed Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s farewell dinner in Harare on Thursday evening.
Vice President Kembo Mohadi attended as guest of honour. Government spokesman Ndavaningi Mangwana said Mohadi represented “on behalf of… Mnangagwa.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga also attended and addressed the farewell gathering.
Secret Belarus Trips Raise Questions
A senior government source told ZimLive this was not Mnangagwa’s first secret departure.
“He has, in fact, made this exact trip [to Belarus] before, leaving late at night and returning early morning after a couple of days. It’s just that this time someone caught onto it,” the official said.
Mnangagwa has strengthened ties with Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko. Additionally, Harare and Minsk continue expanding cooperation in agriculture, mining, and military equipment.
