The Civic Engagement Forum of Zimbabwe has appealed to the Zimbabwean government to facilitate the return of its citizens from South Africa, citing what it says is a deteriorating humanitarian situation affecting Zimbabwean nationals.
According to the organisation, approximately 146 Zimbabweans have been displaced in Daggafontein, Springs, on Johannesburg’s East Rand, following recent community unrest and attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The forum alleges that some foreign residents have been instructed to vacate the area by 15 June, while others have reportedly faced intimidation and been forced from their homes by local residents.
The group warns that the number of displaced people could increase and says the ongoing situation presents serious safety and humanitarian concerns.
Displacement Linked to Illegal Mining Crackdown
Speaking to SABC News, Ambassador General Sithole said the displacement occurred after a police operation aimed at curbing illegal mining activities in the area.
He alleged that following the raid, several landlords removed tenants from their properties, while some community members began pressuring foreign nationals to leave their homes.
Sithole further claimed that a number of those affected are currently sheltering in nearby bushland after being displaced.
Call for Assisted Return
The Civic Engagement Forum says it is engaging Zimbabwean authorities in an effort to secure support for citizens who wish to return home voluntarily.
“We are engaging the government of Zimbabwe to assist with voluntary repatriation efforts for those affected,” Sithole said.
Ongoing Concerns Over Immigration
The latest developments come against the backdrop of longstanding tensions surrounding undocumented immigration in certain South African communities.
Some residents argue that foreign nationals contribute to increased pressure on employment opportunities, housing availability and public services.
South Africa has experienced several outbreaks of violence directed at foreign nationals in recent years, including incidents in 2008, 2015 and 2021, which resulted in fatalities and widespread displacement.
