Kaizer Chiefs have yet to announce their new head coach officially. However, former co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef may have revealed the club’s plans.
Speaking to Lorenz Kohler in the iDiski Times digital newspaper, Ben Youssef repeatedly referred to Fernando Da Cruz as the coach expected to take charge next season.
During the interview, Ben Youssef discussed the current squad. He also assessed the gap between Amakhosi and rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The question mentioned “the next coach, presumably Fernando Da Cruz.” In response, Ben Youssef urged supporters to remain realistic about expectations.
“It will be tough. Next season, if they stay in the top four, not top three. I think it would be a good performance for coach Fernando da Cruz. And I know he’s one of the best coaches in Africa.
“In CAF, if they reach the quarter-final, it will be a big result. But that’s being realistic…”
As a result, his remarks are likely to intensify speculation around Da Cruz’s appointment. Nevertheless, Kaizer Chiefs have not confirmed anything yet.
Da Cruz Could Build on Existing Project
The former Chiefs assistant was also asked whether Da Cruz would continue the football project started last season.
Ben Youssef acknowledged the French coach prefers a 4-3-3 formation. In contrast, Chiefs largely used a 4-2-3-1 system.
Despite that difference, he highlighted Da Cruz’s flexibility and modern football knowledge.
“But the only thing I know, he’s one of the people that is always following the new game models, the trends in football.
“He watches a lot of football, he’s always updated and always knows what’s going on. He has many ideas, and I appreciate him,” the Tunisian concluded.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Ben Youssef is close to joining Durban City FC.
