20 Arrested as Harare Launches Fresh Crackdown on Littering
Twenty people were arrested in Harare’s central business district on Wednesday as city authorities intensified efforts to tackle littering and improve cleanliness in the capital.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Harare City Council, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) as part of an ongoing campaign to enforce environmental laws.

Joint Operation Targets Offenders
City officials said the arrests were made during a coordinated anti-littering exercise aimed at discouraging the improper disposal of waste in public spaces.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts by authorities to create a cleaner and healthier urban environment while encouraging residents and visitors to adopt responsible waste management practices.
Community Service for Some Offenders
According to the City of Harare, four of those apprehended were directed to clean specific areas within the city centre as part of corrective action measures.
Officials said such interventions are intended not only to punish offenders but also to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining clean public spaces.
Authorities Warn of More Arrests
Harare City Council acting principal communications officer Mercy Makuvatsine said the campaign against littering would continue and urged members of the public to play their part in keeping the city clean.
She said the council, working together with EMA and the police, remains committed to promoting a safe and healthy environment for all residents.
Makuvatsine warned that individuals caught discarding waste irresponsibly risk arrest and prosecution under existing laws.
Drive for a Cleaner Capital
The latest arrests come as authorities step up environmental enforcement measures across Harare amid growing concerns over litter and illegal dumping.
Officials are encouraging the public to make use of designated waste disposal facilities and to support ongoing efforts to improve sanitation and cleanliness throughout the city.
