Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has dismissed speculation that he has retired from football following his departure from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants.

The 37-year-old, who left Amakhosi at the end of last season, has been out of active play, leading many to assume he had hung up his boots. However, Khune insists he is still open to returning to the game.

“I Still Want to Play” – Itumeleng Khune

Speaking to iDiski Times, Khune made it clear that he is staying fit and ready for any opportunity that may come his way.

Only God will decide that it’s over.

Right now I still want to play. I’m keeping fit and playing five-a-side football, getting myself ready for any phone call that may come through, saying, ‘Itu, we need your services.’ Listen, I’ll be there,” he said.

Inspired by Denis Onyango

Khune pointed to fellow veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango of Mamelodi Sundowns, who is still playing at 39, as motivation to keep going.

“If Denis Onyango is 39 going on 40, why should I be in a hurry at 37 going on 38? Hence, I’m saying if a call comes through now, I’m going.”

Eyes on Bafana Bafana Goalkeeper Coach Role

While staying open to playing again, Khune has also expressed interest in joining Bafana Bafana’s technical team in the future.

Hopefully, the doors will open. I will take that opportunity when it comes to be a goalkeeper coach and help transfer my skills to the future goalkeepers of South Africa.”

Khune reportedly turned down offers from Kaizer Chiefs to take on a commercial or marketing role, reaffirming his desire to remain involved in the sport — either as a player or as a coach.
