Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma’s Extradition and Firearm Cases Postponed in Johannesburg Court
Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, has been remanded in custody after making his first appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges linked to the alleged unlawful possession of a firearm.
The 45-year-old appeared in court on Monday following his arrest in Kensington, Johannesburg, during a multi-agency operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), Interpol, Crime Intelligence and the Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
Prosecutors successfully requested that the case be postponed to July 22 while authorities verify Tshuma’s immigration status in South Africa.
State seeks time to complete investigations
State prosecutor Henry Mbobo told the court that investigators required additional time to establish whether Tshuma was legally in the country.
He also informed the court that police allegedly recovered a 9mm firearm from Tshuma at the time of his arrest.
The defence, represented by lawyer Chrispin Machingura, did not oppose the postponement.
The magistrate ordered that Tshuma remain in custody until the next court appearance, adding that he may apply for bail if he qualifies once the verification process has been completed.
Extradition request also before the court
In a separate but related matter, the court also postponed extradition proceedings to July 22.
South African authorities are handling a provisional extradition request from the United Kingdom, where Tshuma is wanted in connection with the deaths of his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, and their two daughters.
The State told the court it was still awaiting the full extradition request, including the supporting case documents from British authorities.
During proceedings, Machingura said the defence had not yet received a copy of the arrest warrant issued against his client and requested access to the document.
The prosecution indicated that the warrant would be made available.
No bail application for now
The defence also informed the court that it would not seek bail at this stage.
“We are engaging with the State. We will assess the position by 22 July and see what progress has been made,” Machingura told the court.
He added that the defence hoped there would be meaningful developments before the next hearing.
Police continue investigations
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe previously confirmed that Tshuma faces both the firearm charge and extradition proceedings.
She said detectives were investigating how he allegedly obtained the unlicensed firearm and were also looking into its source.
Mathe added that investigators had found no evidence suggesting Tshuma had been harboured while in South Africa.
The case returns to the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 22 July, when the court is expected to receive updates on Tshuma’s immigration status and the extradition process.
