Fire Destroys UZ Avondale Staff Housing, 12 Families Displaced

A fire swept through a University of Zimbabwe property in Avondale, Harare, on Tuesday morning. As a result, 12 staff members and their families lost their accommodation. Fortunately, nobody suffered injuries.

The blaze started at about 10 AM on 30 June 2026. University officials later confirmed that several residential units sustained major damage.

“The University confirms that no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire. However, extensive damage was caused to some of the residential units,” the statement said.

“Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway. Assessments to determine the full extent of the damage to the affected units are also ongoing.

“The University is working closely with the Fire Brigade, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, and other relevant authorities in these processes.”

University Provides Emergency Assistance

Following the incident, the university immediately activated its emergency response plan. Officials then arranged temporary accommodation for the affected families.

In addition, the university supplied meals, bedding, clothing and other essential items. The institution also introduced emotional support for those affected.

Meanwhile, the university’s Psychosocial Clinic continues to provide counselling and trauma support services. These services aim to help staff members and their families recover emotionally.

“The University remains committed to ensuring that all affected families receive the necessary support while investigations and assessments continue,” the statement said.
