Bulawayo Man Accused of Axing Friend Over US$20 Debt Goes on the Run

Police in Bulawayo are searching for a man accused of attacking his friend with an axe after a dispute over an unpaid US$20 debt turned violent at a local market.

The suspect, identified as Nqobile Ndiweni, allegedly assaulted 40-year-old Mlungisi Ndlovu at Manwele Market in Mzilikazi on 1 July before fleeing the scene. Authorities have since appealed to the public for information that could lead to his arrest.

Debt Dispute Turns Violent

According to B-Metro, the disagreement stemmed from money he had been trying to recover for nearly a year.

He said the debt arose after Ndiweni borrowed his cellphone, which was later reportedly lost. Ndiweni allegedly promised to compensate him with US$20, but the money was never paid despite repeated requests.

On the day of the incident, Ndlovu said he was not asking for the full amount.

He claimed he only requested a small portion of the money so he could buy relish for his family.

Argument Ends in Alleged Axe Attack

Ndlovu said Ndiweni initially threw his cellphone onto the ground and told him to take it instead of the cash before walking away.

However, he alleged that the suspect returned a short while later carrying a small metal axe.

He said he was struck twice on the forehead before losing consciousness.

The next thing he remembers, he said, was waking up at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Victim Treated for Serious Head Injuries

The alleged assault left Ndlovu with two deep cuts to the left side of his forehead.

He was admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he remained for several days before being discharged on 4 July.

Ndlovu said he was shocked that an argument over a relatively small amount of money had escalated into such violence.

Police Appeal for Information

Bulawayo police have confirmed the incident and launched a manhunt for Ndiweni.

Police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele urged anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to report it to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
