Relebohile Mofokeng Opens Up on R70 Million Belgium Move After Delaying Europe for Orlando Pirates

Relebohile Mofokeng Reveals He Knew About Belgium Move Before Season End

Newly signed Royale Union Saint-Gilloise forward Relebohile Mofokeng has disclosed that he was aware he would be moving to Belgium before the final stretch of the Betway Premiership season.

Speaking during an interview on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube on Metro FM, the Bafana Bafana international said he learned about the transfer three matches before the campaign concluded.

According to the 21-year-old, the opportunity represented the right step in his career as he sought a club that would allow him to continue developing while opening the door to bigger opportunities in Europe.

Transfer completed after international duty

Mofokeng explained that only his medical assessment and personal terms remained before the move could be finalised.

After representing South Africa during the FIFA 2026 World Cup campaign, he travelled directly from Los Angeles to Brussels to complete the transfer.

The deal is understood to be worth more than R70 million, making it one of the biggest overseas transfers involving a young South African player.

The winger said he sees the Belgian club as an ideal platform to continue improving, with the long-term ambition of eventually earning a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Ready for the physical challenge

With Union Saint-Gilloise set to compete in both the Belgian Pro League and the UEFA Champions League, attention has turned to whether Mofokeng can cope with the physical demands of European football.

The former Orlando Pirates star dismissed concerns, pointing to his experience playing in major international competitions for both club and country.

He acknowledged that he intends to add more strength but expressed confidence that the club’s coaching staff will help him develop physically without changing the style of play that has made him successful.

Why he delayed his European dream

Mofokeng also confirmed that he had opportunities to leave South Africa before the start of last season but deliberately postponed his move abroad.

He said his priority was to help Orlando Pirates end their long wait for the Betway Premiership title before pursuing his European ambitions.
