ZACC, Local Government Ministry Launch Joint Task Force to Probe Council Corruption

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has joined forces with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. Together, they have created a special task force to investigate suspected corruption in local authorities nationwide.

The decision follows growing complaints from residents about alleged corruption in several councils. Reported concerns include disputed land allocations, procurement irregularities, and abuse of office by council officials.

Speaking during African Anti-Corruption Day commemorations in Victoria Falls on Saturday, ZACC chairperson Michael Reza said authorities were responding to issues raised by communities.

“We are aware of the issues that have been raised by the residents of this beautiful city of Victoria Falls,” said Reza.

“I would like to advise that, as ZACC, working together with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, we have set up a joint special task force to investigate cases of suspected corruption in local authorities.”

Task force targets growing corruption concerns

Reza explained that the joint initiative aims to strengthen investigations into suspected misconduct within local councils. Authorities hope the partnership will improve accountability and restore public confidence.

He also highlighted corruption risks in Matabeleland North Province. The province’s rich wildlife, forests, and mineral resources attract individuals seeking illegal personal gain.

According to Reza, these resources create opportunities for crimes such as fraud, bribery, and abuse of office. Consequently, authorities remain committed to tackling such offences.

ZACC urges patience and supports whistleblowers

Meanwhile, Reza acknowledged that some investigations take considerable time to complete. However, he stressed that every inquiry must be thorough and carefully conducted.

He recognised that lengthy investigations can frustrate affected communities. Nevertheless, he insisted that detailed investigations produce stronger and more reliable outcomes.

Furthermore, Reza applauded citizens who report suspected corruption. He described whistleblowers and witnesses as indispensable partners in exposing graft and helping authorities build stronger cases.
