Former Highlanders Goalkeeper Njabulo ‘Popo’ Nyoni Dies
Former Highlanders and Chicken Inn goalkeeper Njabulo “Popo” Nyoni has died.
Nyoni passed away on Thursday at his family home in Cement Siding, Bulawayo. The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.

A Respected Figure Between the Posts
During his playing career, Nyoni established himself as a dependable goalkeeper and featured for Highlanders and Chicken Inn. He also shared the field with several notable footballers, including Guide Goddard, Ntokozo Tshuma and Simon Njeleza.
Known for his calm presence in goal and commitment to the game, Nyoni earned the respect of teammates, coaches and supporters throughout his career.

Coach Pays Emotional Tribute
Following news of his passing, coach Dumaza paid tribute to his former player, describing Nyoni as a talented goalkeeper whose football journey began on the dusty grounds of Cement Siding.
He recalled mentoring Nyoni alongside Blazio Mdekunye, saying they helped nurture his goalkeeping abilities from a young age.
The coach said Nyoni belonged to a gifted generation of footballers from the suburb, alongside players such as Zephaniah Ngozo, Joel Ngozo, Mawulani Phiri, Ndumiso Khanye, Ntokozo Tshuma, Simon Njeleza, Mthokozisi Msebe, Rodrick Masina and Nelson Masina, who all dreamed of making their mark in Zimbabwean football.
Remembered Beyond Football
Dumaza said Nyoni’s influence extended beyond the pitch, describing him as a humble, respectful and passionate individual who inspired aspiring footballers from smaller communities around Bulawayo.
He said Nyoni’s dedication, discipline and sportsmanship would continue to motivate future generations of goalkeepers.
The football community is expected to continue paying tribute to the former shot-stopper as they remember his contribution to Highlanders, Chicken Inn and Zimbabwean football.
