Former Highlanders FC coach Baltemar Brito could be on his way back to Zimbabwe – this time, possibly taking the reins at struggling giants CAPS United.

CAPS United Eyes Baltemar Brito

Brito, who once worked alongside Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese tactician’s early coaching days, made a name for himself in Zimbabwe when he led Highlanders during the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season. His solid and structured approach to the game won him praise and sparked life into the local football scene.

Now, CAPS United, the Harare-based club where Nyasha Mushekwi launched his professional career, is said to be eyeing Brito as a potential replacement for current coach Lloyd Chitembwe. The team, nicknamed the Green Machine, has had a nightmare start to the 2025 season, losing five of their first seven matches, managing just one win and one draw. They currently sit second from bottom in the 18-team log.

What Other Candidates Are Being Considered

Club owner Farai Jere is believed to be considering changes, and Brito’s name has come up as a serious contender to help steer the club back on track.

Another name in the frame is Zambian coach Ian Bakala, who currently heads the Zambia Under-17 men’s team. However, Brito’s PSL experience may give him an edge in the eyes of the CAPS leadership.

Mushekwi, who later starred for Mamelodi Sundowns and played overseas, has remained close to his former club. In 2019, he gifted CAPS United a luxury team bus worth R2.2 million and has helped out over the years with gear and financial support.

With the club desperate to turn around their fortunes, all eyes are now on whether Brito will accept the offer and return to Zimbabwean football.
