Truck crashes into a yard in Pietermaritzburg

A driver of a Msunduzi municipal vehicle is lucky to be alive after a truck driving down Sweetwaters Road crashed into the vehicle and then ploughed into a property on Tuesday evening.

According to eyewitnesses on scene, the truck crashed into a municipal vehicle parked in the traffic island at the bottom of Sweetwaters Road and proceeded to plough into the property on the corner of Greenwood Road.

It is believed the truck lost its brakes and the steering locked as it was going down the hill.

Olivia Ireland said her parents were home and her youngest daughter, who had returned from school just a few minutes before, was in the kitchen when she heard a terrible bang.

“My mom was busy ironing when she saw the truck coming towards the house.”

The truck and the municipal vehicle landed in her yard, stopping metres before her front door.

However, some of the logs crashed through the windows of the lounge and her daughter’s bedroom.

The driver of the municipal vehicle was treated on the scene by emergency services and transported to hospital for further care.

The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.

Ireland said it was a miracle that the municipal worker did not have his seat belt on, as the impact of the truck threw him into the passenger seat.

“The driver’s side was completely flattened. If he had been in the driver’s seat he would have died,” she said.

When the publication arrived at the scene emergency services were trying to remove the truck from the yard, but had to call in a larger tow truck.

Describing the experience as “extremely traumatizing, Ireland’s 14-year-old daughter, Maddison, said she panicked when she heard multiple bangs, and then ran to her gran.

“I knew something was hitting us. I ran [to check] and I saw the truck and the bakkie and I just ran to my gran,” she said.

“It was extremely traumatic, but I am just glad that the drivers and my family, and everyone is okay.”

Ireland said her garden is completely obliterated, including her fish pond and fish, but she is just thankful that no one was killed.

“It is a miracle that no one was killed.”

Her family, who have lived there for the past 12 years have witnessed multiple incidents of trucks losing control and crashing into neighbours yards.

In July 2022, the publication reported on a runaway truck ploughed into a property a few houses away on Greenwood Road.
