Malusi Booi and 9 co-accused will remain in police custody

Former City of Cape Town Human Settlements MMC Malusi Booi and nine of his co-accused will remain in police custody.

The group appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on fraud and corruption-related charges.

Booi and his co-accused applied for bail and the matter has been postponed to Friday.

The group was arrested this week in connection with alleged corruption in the metro’s Human Settlements Directorate.

In March last year, police raided Booi’s office and confiscated cellphones and laptops.

The state alleges that the group was part of a criminal enterprise headed by alleged underworld boss Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson.

According to the state the municipality awarded 11 construction tenders worth more than R850 million during Booi’s tenure as the head of the Human Settlements Directorate.

The state alleges that Booi influenced tender outcomes in favour of Stansfield’s wife’s company, Glomix House.

The state alleges that Booi received payments of more than R4 million for his alleged involvement in the corruption.
