Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has suffered a major setback after picking up a serious thigh injury at Chicago Fire.
The 20-year-old sustained a thigh tear during training. Consequently, he will spend about two months on the sidelines.
The injury keeps him out until at least mid-September. He will also miss six MLS matches and the 2026 MLS All-Star Game.
Injury clouds European transfer hopes
Mbokazi’s injury comes at the worst possible time. Several European clubs have tracked the talented centre-back in recent months.
His impressive displays for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup attracted strong interest from overseas.
However, Europe’s summer transfer window closes on August 31 and September 1 across the major leagues.
That timeline leaves Mbokazi with little chance of regaining full fitness before the deadline.
Interested clubs usually require medical examinations before completing transfers. Therefore, many could delay any formal offers.
Instead, potential buyers may wait until the defender completes his rehabilitation. They will likely want proof of his full recovery first.
Chicago Fire remain in a strong position
Despite the setback, Mbokazi’s long-term future remains bright. The injury has not weakened interest in his services.
Chicago Fire recently secured his future with a contract running until 2029.
As a result, the MLS club faces no pressure to negotiate a sale this year.
The long-term agreement also strengthens Chicago’s position. The club can wait until Mbokazi returns to full fitness before considering transfer offers.
