One Person Killed, Five Injured in Victoria Falls After Car Hits Elephant

One person was killed while five were injured in Victoria Falls after a car hit an elephant.

In the vehicle collision, one person lost their life and five others sustained injuries when their car struck an elephant near Victoria Falls. The tragic incident occurred Wednesday night, approximately 40 kilometres from the famous tourist destination along Kazungula Road.

Car Hits Elephant In Victoria Falls

According to reports, the driver of a Toyota Isis carrying six passengers attempted to overtake a stopped vehicle with its hazard lights activated. During this manoeuvre, the car collided with a young elephant, causing the massive animal to fall onto the vehicle’s roof.

The impact forced the car off the roadway, leaving all six occupants trapped for more than half an hour beneath the weight of the injured elephant. Wildlife rangers from the parks department were forced to euthanise the suffering animal to facilitate rescue operations. The rescue operations started soon after the elephant’s life ended.

Tragically, the front-seat passenger succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The remaining five individuals received medical treatment for injuries sustained in the collision. The injured passengers were ferried to the hospital so that they could be treated for their injuries.

Authorities Warn Drivers Against Endangering Wildlife On The Roads

This incident highlights the persistent danger of wildlife crossings in the Victoria Falls area, where elephants frequently roam unrestricted through unfenced forest areas. Local authorities struggle to balance wildlife conservation and public safety along busy tourist routes.
