African Union’s 2025 Internship Program Is Now Open. The African Union (AU) is a unique Pan-African continental body, established to drive Africa’s integration and development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion, and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and its Member States. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the AU is committed to building institutional capacity and implementing robust programs to realize its vision of “An Integrated, Prosperous, and Peaceful Africa.”

In this spirit, the African Union Commission is pleased to invite applications from citizens of AU Member States to participate in its Internship Program.

Purpose of the Internship Program

The AU Internship Program offers an opportunity for young professionals to gain hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of the African Union’s work. It serves as a platform for learning and capacity building, targeting individuals who are passionate about contributing to the continent’s development.

This is a full-time program through which participants will:

  • Complement their academic learning with practical experience

  • Build professional competencies in a dynamic, multicultural environment

  • Contribute to ongoing projects and initiatives within the AU Commission

Interns are expected to demonstrate cultural sensitivity, initiative, and a strong interest in Pan-African issues.

Focus Areas

Interns may be placed in various departments and directorates of the AU Commission, including but not limited to:

  • Cabinet of the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson

  • Office of the Director General

  • Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Environment (ARBE)

  • Economic Development, Trade, Industry, and Mining (ETIM)

  • Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (ESTI)

  • Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS)

  • Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development (HHS)

  • Management Information Systems, ERP, and Human Resources

  • Protocol, Legal Counsel, Safety and Security Services

  • Women, Gender and Youth (WGY)

  • Citizens and Diaspora (CIDO), Peace Fund Secretariat, and NEPAD

  • And other administrative and technical offices

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be citizens of an African Union Member State

  • Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s program OR have recently completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree

  • Be 32 years of age or younger at the time of selection

  • Be fluent in at least one AU working language (Arabic, English, French, or Portuguese)

  • Possess high moral standards and integrity

  • Have no prior criminal convictions (except minor traffic offenses)

  • No prior work experience is required

Terms and Conditions for the African Union 2025 Internship

  • The African Union does not provide financial support for interns – travel, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s responsibility

  • Internship duration: 3 months (renewable once for an additional 3 months)

  • Interns must secure personal health insurance for the duration of the internship

  • The AU will support visa processing, but costs must be borne by the intern

  • Interns are not entitled to any remuneration or travel reimbursement

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Effective interpersonal skills

  • Familiarity with email and internet applications

  • Knowledge of additional AU languages (Spanish, Kiswahili) is an advantage
