MSU Fires Nine Media Lecturers Over Exam Paper Blunders And Misconduct

The Midlands State University (MSU) has reportedly dismissed nine lecturers from its Department of Media, Communication, Film and Theatre Arts following allegations of gross incompetence linked to the handling of university examinations.

The reported dismissals follow an internal disciplinary process in which lecturers were accused of serious lapses in preparing and administering examination papers.

Allegations Centre On Faulty Examination Papers

According to The Chronicle, the lecturers were accused of setting examination papers containing significant errors that allegedly caused confusion among students.

One of the reported mistakes involved incorrect instructions directing candidates to answer all questions in Section B and all three questions in Section B. The paper was instead meant to instruct students to answer all questions in Section A and three questions in Section B.

Sources also alleged that the lecturers failed to correct the mistakes promptly after the errors were identified.

In addition, some of the lecturers allegedly did not attend examination sessions for their own papers, despite university regulations requiring lecturers to be present during examinations.

The question papers were found to contain numerous errors. Furthermore, some lecturers were absent from the examination venue during the sitting of their respective papers, contrary to university regulations, which make attendance compulsory.

“There was also a failure to address the mistakes in a timely manner,” said a source who requested anonymity.

Thirteen Lecturers Faced Disciplinary Hearings

Sources said the disciplinary process initially involved 13 lecturers who were charged and brought before a hearing.

Following the proceedings, nine lecturers were reportedly dismissed, while the outcome for the remaining four could not be immediately established.
