101-Year-Old Great-Grandmother Arrested Over Cannabis After Losing Her Shop In Fire
A 101-year-old great-grandmother has been arrested in Nigeria after authorities allegedly found her with 90g of cannabis she was selling in her community. Esther Ogunmabo was arrested in Ilisan, Ogun State, on Saturday, 15 August 2026, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
101-Year-Old Woman Found With Cannabis
The NDLEA said Ogunmabo was found with retail sachets containing skunk, a strain of cannabis.
The agency said she told investigators that she turned to selling the drug after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire.
“The centenarian told operatives that she resorted to the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was razed by fire.”
The NDLEA also alleged that one of Ogunmabo’s daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied her with the substance every four days.
Ogunmabo allegedly sold it in smaller quantities to people in her community.
NDLEA Grants Bail To Centenarian
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa ordered that Ogunmabo be granted bail and receive counselling because of her advanced age.
Her daughter has also been arrested.
The NDLEA’s announcement, dated 23 August 2026, came as the agency reported several other drug seizures across Nigeria, including more than 42kg of narcotics intercepted aboard a boat bound for Cameroon.
The agency also announced its first seizure of illicit drugs shipped from Thailand, recovering large quantities of synthetic cannabis at ports in Lagos.
The case involving Ogunmabo remains subject to further legal proceedings.
