Malaika Mushandu Takes Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe Dethronement Fight To High Court
The dispute surrounding Malaika Mushandu’s brief reign as Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe 2026 has entered a new phase after she challenged her dethronement in court.
Mushandu approached the High Court of Zimbabwe in Harare on August 26, asking the court to overturn the decision that stripped her of the crown.
Her application argues that the process used to remove her was procedurally unfair and failed to respect basic principles of natural justice.
The legal challenge comes days after Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe announced that her tenure had been terminated.

Crown Removed After Just 11 Days
Mushandu was crowned Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe on June 6, 2026.
Her reign ended only 11 days later, according to the court papers, with the organisation announcing the termination on August 22.
The decision was attributed to alleged misconduct and ineligibility.
A statement signed by Joshua Taderera, a member of the Miss Universe Zimbabwe selection committee, said Mushandu had allegedly failed to satisfy standards and contractual requirements imposed by both the Zimbabwean and international Miss Cosmo organisations.
Mushandu initially did not publicly respond to the decision.
Her latest court application now puts her account of events before the judiciary.
She Says A Meeting Became A Disciplinary Hearing
According to Mushandu, she was called to a meeting after her coronation without being told that she was facing disciplinary proceedings.
She says she had been away on a business trip in Victoria Falls and had informed the organisation that she could have limited availability.
She also told the organisation that her manager could be contacted during her absence.
Mushandu says she later learnt that concerns had been raised about her by Tendai Bongani Hunda.
A meeting was subsequently scheduled for July 3.
Her lawyers reportedly sought clarity about the meeting and warned that she should receive adequate notice if disciplinary proceedings were being contemplated.
Mushandu says Patience Lusengo assured her that the gathering was not a disciplinary hearing.
She attended, believing it was an ordinary meeting.
In her court papers, she now claims that understanding was wrong.
“The assurance proved illusory. What had been presented as an ordinary meeting was, in truth, a disciplinary enquiry concealed beneath the guise of a meeting.”
She further alleges that she was not properly informed of the accusations against her or given sufficient opportunity to defend herself.
Pageant Queen Disputes Allegations
Mushandu says the organisation’s concerns appeared to involve claims that she left the stage prematurely after her coronation and later became unavailable.
She denies the allegations.
More importantly, she argues that she was not given a proper opportunity to challenge the claims or present evidence in her defence.
“Those allegations are wholly denied. More importantly, I was never afforded a proper opportunity to address them on their merits.”
She also claims that no evidence was properly presented against her and that she was not given an opportunity to question witnesses or call her own.
According to Mushandu, she only discovered that the meeting had been treated as a disciplinary hearing after receiving the written determination revoking her title.
She described the process as fundamentally unfair.
“Thus, the first notice I received that I had stood trial was the letter informing me that judgement had already been given against me.”
‘The Title Was More Than Financial’
Mushandu’s legal challenge also highlights what she says is at stake beyond money.
She told the court that the Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe crown represented another significant milestone in a modelling career spanning more than a decade.
She pointed to her earlier achievements, including becoming the youngest Miss Zimbabwe in 2011.
She also cited her participation at Miss World, where she reached the top 10, as well as her first runner-up finish at Top Model of the World in 2012 and her World Supermodel International victory.
“My crowning as Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe 2026 was therefore not merely the acquisition of a title, but the continuation of a long-standing career and reputation built upon pageantry, modelling and public representation.”
She argued that the crown carried professional and reputational value that could not simply be reduced to a financial figure.
“The title carries with it prestige, recognition, publicity, professional standing, branding opportunities, and the ability to represent Zimbabwe on international platforms.”
Lawyers Previously Demanded Reinstatement
The court action follows correspondence sent by Mushandu’s lawyers to the respondents on July 28.
Her legal team reportedly raised concerns about the disciplinary process and demanded that the decision be withdrawn.
Mushandu says no meaningful response followed.
She argues that the continued refusal to reverse the decision left her with no option but to seek judicial intervention.
“The Respondents have neither answered the substance of that correspondence nor taken any steps to remedy the unlawful decision.”
She added:
“It is the continuing failure to correct the decision that has compelled me to seek the intervention of this Honourable Court.”
What Mushandu Wants From The Court
Mushandu is asking the High Court to set aside the decision terminating her reign.
A successful application could result in the dethronement decision being nullified and open the way for her reinstatement as Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe 2026.
The respondents named in the application include the Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe organisation, Tendai Bongani Hunda, Joshua Taderera, Simbarashe Chinyemba, Denny Marandure, Patience Lusengo, Apphia Musavengana, Zodwa Mnkandla, Danya Kabwebwe, Tafadzwa Zimoyo, Kevin Zhou, Jane Mutamangira and Gracious Matara.
