Mberengwa Gold Theft Drama: Suspects Flee After High-Speed Chase Ends In Crash And Fire
Six suspected gold thieves are on the run after their getaway vehicle crashed and caught fire during a high-speed pursuit in Mberengwa.
Police later recovered 150 kilogrammes of gold-bearing carbon valued at approximately US$16 500 from the wrecked vehicle.
The dramatic incident unfolded around 1am on Sunday following an alleged break-in at Draw Mark 19 Mine.

Security guard spots suspicious trail
The suspects allegedly targeted underground carbon tanks before escaping with the gold-bearing material.
Their movements were discovered after a mine security guard noticed footprints leading away from the mining area.
The trail reportedly ended at a white Honda Fit parked about 100 metres from the scene.
The guard then teamed up with a mine driver and gave chase in a Honda Shuttle.
The pursuit eventually reached the junction of Old Bulawayo Road and Mimosa Road.
Getaway car crashes and catches fire
The chase came to a sudden end when the two vehicles collided.
The impact severely damaged the Honda Fit, which subsequently caught fire.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed that the six occupants abandoned the vehicle.
“The six occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled into the nearby bushes,” said Insp Mahoko.
The suspects managed to disappear into the surrounding bush before police could apprehend them.
Stolen material found inside wreck
Police officers from the Zvishavane Traffic Section and the Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit later attended the scene.
They searched the burnt-out Honda Fit and discovered the stolen gold-bearing carbon inside.
According to Mahoko, all the stolen material was recovered despite the suspects escaping.
The recovery means the suspects left the scene empty-handed after their alleged attempt to make off with the valuable material.
Police hunt suspects
Investigators are now working to identify the six suspects and establish their whereabouts.
Police have appealed to anyone who may have information about the group to come forward.
“We appeal to members of the public with information that could assist police in identifying and apprehending the suspects to report to their nearest police station. Investigations are ongoing,” Mahoko said.
Police have intensified efforts to track down the suspects as investigations into the alleged mine theft continue.
