Bulawayo Woman in Court for Stealing and Squandering US$10K Joint Savings
A Bulawayo woman has landed in court after allegedly making off with US$10,000 her ex-husband had entrusted her to safeguard.
Betina Ndlovu (31), from Pumula East suburb, recently appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Learnmore Khumalo, charged with theft of trust property. She was released from custody and will return to court for trial on 7 May.
According to the prosecutor, Ms Mandrela Chisiiwa, the drama dates back to June last year when Ndlovu was still living with her then-husband, Mr Gilbert Zuvarinwe.
Summarising what happened, Chisiiwa said Mr Zuvarinwe came home from work one day to find Ndlovu missing — and so were several household items. Upon closer inspection, he realised that US$10,000 in cash they had saved together had also vanished, along with key documents for two houses and two vehicles.
When Zuvarinwe later tracked Ndlovu down at her new place and demanded answers, she failed to explain what happened to the money or the documents.
With no progress made, Zuvarinwe reported the matter to the police, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest. Sadly for him, neither the cash nor the documents were ever recovered.
Another Pumula East Woman Accused of Stealing During Night Out
In a separate but strangely similar case, another woman from Pumula East is also facing theft charges.
Pretty Khumalo (26) appeared before the same magistrate after allegedly stealing US$200 from a fellow reveller during a night out.
Ms Chisiiwa told the court that on the night of 28 January this year, Khumalo allegedly took the money from Mr Thulani Ndlovu at MaNdlovu Beer Garden, taking advantage of the fact that he was heavily drunk around 11 PM.
Just like in the earlier case, the stolen cash was not recovered. Khumalo was also released and will be back in court on 29 April.
