Zimbabweans Fleeing SA Protests Get Major Duty-Free Relief At Beitbridge
Zimbabweans returning home from South Africa amid anti-migrant protests will be able to bring back household goods, business equipment and certain vehicles under a more flexible duty-free arrangement introduced by the Government.
The measures were outlined by Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) Private Imports Manager at Beitbridge, Tawanda Muchena, during a parliamentary verification visit to the border post on Monday, 7 September 2026.
ZIMRA Opens Express Lane For Returning Zimbabweans
Muchena said ZIMRA had introduced an express lane for returnees, with compliance checks being completed at the reception and support centre.
He explained that buses and trucks carrying the returnees’ property were also benefiting from waived statutory fees.
“We have created an express lane whereby they arrive through the bus terminal, and the compliance checks are done at the reception and support centre.”
He added that the Zimbabwean consulate provides a letter and manifest listing the goods and their owners.
Returning Residents Can Bring Back Business Equipment
The arrangement also covers equipment used by Zimbabweans in businesses in South Africa.
Muchena said ZIMRA had already cleared items including welding machines, industrial sewing machines and building tools.
Vehicles can also qualify, although conditions apply. A returning resident must have been outside Zimbabwe for at least two years and must have owned the vehicle for at least six months before returning.
Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs Minister Albert Nguluvhe said the intervention followed concerns that some Zimbabweans had left South Africa hurriedly, abandoning valuable possessions.
The Government says the measures are intended to support the repatriation process and help returning citizens settle back into their communities.
