Pitso Mosimane has outlined how Relebohile Mofokeng could fit into his Bafana Bafana plans.
The new coach included the young attacker in his final 30-man squad. South Africa will face Guinea and Eritrea in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
Mosimane returned as Bafana coach earlier this month. He replaced Hugo Broos after South Africa’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
Mofokeng has also started the new season strongly with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
Mosimane backs Mofokeng’s versatility
Mosimane was asked about Mofokeng after naming his squad for the upcoming qualifiers.
The coach explained that he focuses on what players can contribute to his system.
“I don’t know if the coach did not believe in him. I have to go with what is right,” Mosimane said.
He also highlighted Mofokeng’s performances during South Africa’s recent World Cup campaign.
“I saw the boy playing very well in his last two games in the World Cup, he did well, he dribbled, he played in the different role of the 3-4-3, and he has been used as a 10 on the right in the formation of the 3-4-3 which he has never played in, and adjusting to that formation, scoring goals,” he explained.
Mofokeng’s ability to operate in several positions gives Mosimane more tactical options.
Mofokeng offers several attacking options
The 21-year-old previously played mainly from the left during his Orlando Pirates career.
However, he has also moved into central attacking areas.
His versatility has continued since his switch to Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
Mofokeng has already produced goals during his early games in Belgium.
Mosimane believes those different roles have helped the youngster develop.
“Remember at Orlando Amstel Arena we used to see him playing as a winger; suddenly he is a 10 in a 4-2-3-1 formation. So the boy shows us he can play in different formations, and wherever he has been playing, he’s been scoring or assisting,” Mosimane added.
Mofokeng remains part of Mosimane’s plans for the opening AFCON qualifiers.
Bafana Bafana host Guinea on September 26 before facing Eritrea four days later.
