Baba Harare Issues Warning To Pastors After 23-Year-Old’s Death
Jiti and Afro-fusion musician Baba Harare has warned pastors and church leaders against exerting excessive control over congregants’ personal lives following the death of a 23-year-old Harare man, Canaan Mumba, just 18 days after he paid lobola for his wife.
Mumba reportedly paid roora for Thelma Hliwayo on 5 September 2026 and wanted to bring her home and begin their married life. However, reports allege that church leaders insisted that the couple should first have a formal white wedding.
The reported dispute has since drawn attention to the influence church leaders can have over major family and relationship decisions.
Baba Harare Speaks After Canaan Mumba’s Death
According to the information published by News.co.zw, Mumba was reportedly not financially prepared to hold a white wedding immediately.
Thelma was allegedly still staying under the custody of a pastor while discussions continued over when she would be handed over to her husband.
The families were reportedly expected to resolve the matter on Tuesday night. However, that reportedly did not happen.
Mumba was later found dead.
Baba Harare responded to the tragedy in a social media post on 26 September 2026. He was careful not to claim that he knew what had caused the young man’s death.
“I’ve been thinking about the young man whose life was recently lost. I do not know the full circumstances, and I do not want to speculate about what led to his death.”
He added:
“To his family and everyone who loved him, my heartfelt condolences.”
The musician then used the incident to raise broader questions about the relationship between church leaders and their congregants.
‘Pastors Are Human,’ Baba Harare Says
Baba Harare said pastors can provide spiritual guidance and support but should not necessarily become the final authority on every aspect of a congregant’s life.
“Pastors are human. They can offer guidance and support, but they are not infallible, and we should never treat them as though they are Christ.”
He encouraged congregants to ask questions and seek different perspectives when faced with difficult decisions.
“It is okay to ask questions, seek another perspective, and make decisions about your own life.”
His comments also touched on the relationship between churches and families.
Baba Harare warned against religious environments where members are encouraged to cut themselves off from their relatives.
Musician Warns Against Family Isolation
The musician said joining a church should not automatically mean abandoning relationships with parents, siblings or other relatives.
“I also believe that joining a church should not mean cutting yourself off from your maternal or paternal family.”
He said there should be room for both family relationships and religious communities where those relationships are safe.
Baba Harare further cautioned against situations where one religious leader becomes the only person a congregant is allowed to trust.
“If a church insists that you abandon your loved ones or makes one ‘spiritual father’ the only voice you are allowed to trust, that is a serious red flag.”
He said faith should provide care rather than fear or isolation.
Baba Harare also urged people to pay attention when loved ones appear to be struggling under religious expectations and to help them find support.
He concluded with a message specifically highlighting men’s wellbeing:
“No church rule is worth a life. Men’s mental health matters too.”
