Hilton College remains one of South Africa’s most costly private schools in 2026.
The prestigious boys-only boarding school stands near Howick in KwaZulu-Natal. It has operated for more than 150 years.
However, attending Hilton College requires a significant financial commitment from families.
Hilton College fees and additional costs in 2026
Parents will pay R441,766 annually for a place at Hilton College in 2026.
The amount covers several essential services provided throughout the school year.
These include tuition, accommodation, meals, laundry and sporting activities.
The fees also cover minor medical care and access to the school’s sanatorium.
Furthermore, pupils receive access to the library and curriculum-related activities.
However, certain activities and personal expenses require additional payments.
Families must also pay a non-refundable entrance fee after receiving an acceptance.
That entrance fee currently stands at R110,441.50.
The payment equals one term’s fees and contributes towards the school’s development programme.
An additional consolidated extras charge applies each term.
The charge stands at R594.25 and covers several smaller school-related expenses.
These can include laundry bags, selected dry cleaning and minor duplication costs.
It can also cover newspapers, sunscreen, school productions and certain social activities.
Meanwhile, some sporting activities can require additional payments.
Golf, rowing and canoeing may involve extra costs for transport and equipment maintenance.
Other expenses can include books, stationery, medication, doctors’ fees and special entertainment.
Travel expenses and certain trips may also fall outside the standard school fees.
Therefore, parents should consider these costs before calculating the total annual commitment.
Using the published figures, the first year could reach approximately R554,600.
That estimate includes annual fees, the entrance payment and roughly R2,377 in extras.
However, it excludes uniforms, books, medical expenses and school trips.
Families should therefore confirm the latest charges directly with Hilton College.
How Hilton College fees have increased
The school’s fees have risen considerably over the past decade.
Back in 2014, Hilton was already the only school charging above R200,000 for boarding and tuition.
Since then, its annual cost has more than doubled.
A 2020 listing placed the annual fee at R321,890.
The 2026 figure therefore represents a substantial increase over that earlier amount.
Hilton College also offers different payment arrangements for families.
South African residents can settle their fees annually or through ten monthly instalments.
Non-resident families follow different payment arrangements and generally pay termly in advance.
Families based outside South Africa must also provide a refundable emergency repatriation deposit.
That deposit equals 1.5 times the applicable termly fees.
Consequently, parents must consider far more than tuition when planning for Hilton College.
The school represents a major financial commitment for most South African families.
For many households, the overall cost can make private boarding education difficult to sustain.
