Family Breaks Silence After Wicknell Chivayo Dies In Helicopter Crash

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed in rural Marondera on Wednesday evening, 30 September 2026.

The confirmation came from family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo, who told ZBC News that the family was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

“We are at a loss for words after the tragic incident.”

The crash happened at around 5pm in the Marondera Rural area, southeast of Harare. Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that a helicopter had crashed in the area.

What Happened In The Marondera Helicopter Crash

Initial police information said the aircraft had six occupants when it went down at about 1700 hours.

However, a later account from government spokesperson Nick Mangwana described the aircraft as carrying a high-profile businessman, four other passengers and two pilots. Reuters and AP both reported that there were no survivors.

The difference in the official accounts means the final number of people aboard had not been consistently reported at the time of publication.

Herbert Chivayo confirmed that Chivayo and Muteke were among those who died.

The confirmation followed earlier reports circulating after the crash, with authorities initially withholding the identities of the victims pending further developments.

The government said investigations into the crash would follow, while emergency teams attended the scene.

For Chivayo’s family, the confirmation marked a devastating end to hours of uncertainty surrounding the businessman and his wife’s whereabouts.

Further details about the aircraft, the other occupants and the circumstances leading to the crash are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
