Three Family Members Die From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning After Mbaura Is Left Burning Overnight
In a tragic development, three family members in Goromonzi died after inhaling carbon monoxide fumes from a charcoal brazier that was left burning overnight inside a poorly ventilated room.
The tragedy occurred on 2 October 2026 in Tafirenyika Village, under Chief Chikwaka, leaving the family traumatised and struggling to raise money for the burials.
Survivor Receives Counselling
According to information provided, 30-year-old Petronella Antonio survived the incident and is now receiving counselling following the deaths of the three family members.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Goromonzi attended the scene, with no foul play suspected in the deaths.
The affected family is reportedly destitute and unable to meet the costs associated with burying their loved ones. Assistance from the Civil Protection authorities has been urgently recommended.
Another Mbaura Tragedy Last Year
The latest deaths come after a similar tragedy claimed the lives of five members of another family in Zvishavane last year.
The five reportedly died in their sleep after bringing a fire brazier into their bedroom to keep warm during freezing winter temperatures.
Authorities believed carbon monoxide fumes accumulated in the enclosed room, resulting in the deaths.
The Danger Of Indoor Braziers
The use of charcoal braziers, commonly known as mbaura, for indoor heating is widespread in rural Zimbabwe, particularly during the colder months.
For households without access to modern heating systems, the portable fire sources can provide much-needed warmth. However, burning charcoal in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces can cause carbon monoxide to accumulate to dangerous levels.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas, meaning people may not realise they are being exposed to it until they become seriously ill.
The gas can cause unconsciousness and death, making carbon monoxide poisoning particularly dangerous when people are asleep.
