Fadzayi Mahere Questions Emergency Response Over Wicknell Chivayo And Lucy’s Missing Heads

Advocate Fadzayi Mahere has questioned Zimbabwe’s emergency response following the revelation that the heads of late businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy, were not recovered after their fatal helicopter crash.

Mahere raised concerns over how the crash scene was handled, arguing that the absence of crucial body parts highlighted broader problems within the country’s emergency services.

Mahere Questions Overnight Response

In a post on Facebook, Mahere said the helicopter went down at around 5pm, but alleged that the bodies remained at the scene until about 8am the following morning.

She questioned whether an active search had been conducted for missing body parts and raised concerns about the conditions in which the victims’ remains were handled.

“When we say fix the nation’s emergency services, this is what we mean.

The helicopter crash happened at around 5pm. The deceased persons’ bodies were left outside to be ravaged by the elements and stolen by wild animals and ‘wild animals’ until around 8am, the next day. Why are they now surprised that crucial body parts, including the heads of the deceased persons, are missing?,” Mahere wrote.

Mahere said the circumstances were particularly distressing for the families of those who died.

“Every person who has passed away in a tragedy deserves dignity. To be buried with such an important body part must be grueling for those who remain. Was there an active search to recover them?” she asked.

Calls For Better Emergency Services

Mahere also questioned why additional resources were allegedly not deployed at the crash site during the night.

“What prevented them from installing a flood light at the scene, doing the necessary forensic work and retrieving the bodies that night?” she asked.

She compared the response to what would ordinarily be expected after a road accident, questioning whether emergency teams would leave victims at a crash scene overnight before returning the following morning.

“If an accident happens on a road, do you just leave the bodies there all night and then come when the sun comes up as if we are in the dark ages?” she wrote.

Mahere linked her concerns to the response to the Kariba disaster, saying she had previously raised concerns about the country’s emergency services.

Criticism Of Government Spending

The former opposition politician argued that Zimbabwe’s emergency services have not received sufficient investment.

“The issue is that there has been no investment into our emergency services. Instead, the money has been spent on laps of luxury for political elites,” Mahere claimed.

She said her criticism of government spending on luxury items and private travel was driven by concerns over the state of public services rather than personal attacks on political leaders.

“When we say don’t waste public money on private jets, Rolls Royces, million-dollar watches and luxury mansions, it’s not because we hate you. It’s not a personal attack.

It is because we want our public services to be solid enough to ensure every person is treated with dignity when they’re vulnerable and need the system to work the most, including you,” she wrote.

Mahere ended her post by calling for political change.

“Instead of heeding this call, you call us names, chant 2040 and think you’re above the need for a functional public service system.

Here we are.

We need new leaders,” she wrote.
