Alick Macheso delivered an emotional tribute to Wicknell Chivayo after returning from a show, where he had travelled during the past few days when Chivayo died.
Macheso breaks down while mourning Chivayo
The sungura star struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke about Chivayo’s death.
Macheso had arrived late because he had been away for a show. However, he returned and joined mourners to pay his respects.
During his speech, the musician broke down in tears while remembering the businessman.
He also thanked Chivayo for the support he gave him during his lifetime.
Chivayo famously gifted Macheso a Mercedes-Benz GLE worth about US$140,000 in 2024.
The businessman also supported members of Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo.
Recently, Chivayo had arranged vehicle gifts for members of Macheso’s long-running band.
Macheso’s grief appeared particularly deep because of their personal relationship.
Zimbabweans react to Macheso’s emotional speech
However, the emotional moment also sparked discussion among some Zimbabweans online.
Some viewers focused on Macheso’s voice and unusual manner of speaking during the speech.
They suggested that he appeared drunk while addressing the mourners.
Those claims, however, remain speculation, and there is no confirmed evidence that Macheso was intoxicated.
Instead, his visible tears and broken speech showed the weight of the moment.
Macheso later publicly described death as a thief that takes people without warning.
“Impfa nimulandi — Rufu imbavha,” he said in his tribute to Chivayo.
He also prayed for strength for Chivayo’s family and everyone affected by the tragedy.
Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, died in a helicopter crash near Marondera.
Their deaths have triggered widespread mourning across Zimbabwe.
