Joe Biden postpones Germany, Angola trips due to looming hurricane in US

The White House has announced that President Joe Biden will postpone his overseas travel to both Germany and Angola due to the looming hurricane descending on the US mainland. Hurricane Milton is currently a category five as it churns towards Florida’s west coast in the Gulf of Mexico and comes just weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the same areas expected to be impacted by the current storm.

Biden’s trip to Angola was billed as an opportunity to bolster economic partnerships and infrastructure investments while strengthening democracy and civic engagement.

President Biden was due to depart for Berlin on Thursday and then travel on to Angola before returning to the United States on October 15th.

It would have marked the first time that Biden would travel to the African continent as President. In a short statement, the White House said that given the projected trajectory and strength of Hurricane Milton, Biden was postponing his upcoming travel in order to oversee preparation for and the response to the storm.

His administration is also still dealing with widespread damage caused by Hurricane Helene across several south eastern states.

It’s unclear when Biden might be able to undertake the trip as President with just over three months left in his term in office which ends in January.
