Hurricane Milton marched across Florida on Thursday, whipping up tornadoes, destroying homes and knocking out power to millions before blowing out into the Atlantic. In St. Petersburg, Florida, a large construction crane collapsed onto an empty street.
Intense winds from Milton left the roof of the landmark stadium Tropicana Field in tatters. Eyewitness video from the Atlantic Coast town of Daytona Beach showed intense winds and rains lashing homes. “The storm was significant, but thankfully this was not the worst-case scenario. The storm did weaken before landfall and the storm surge, as initially reported, has not been as significant overall as what was observed for Hurricane Helene,” says Florida Governor Ron Desantis.
Tampa resident Daniel Barn, 54, owner of a commercial property that was swamped under water that was six feet deep in some parts, said he lost phone service. Some of the buildings on his property still had power, but he was concerned that the flooding could spark a fire. Born and raised here, never seen anything like this,” Barn said.
