How ‘Wicked Deejay’ Became Winky D

Winky D explained that audiences began calling him “Wicked Deejay” during his early performances at sound clashes, with the name eventually evolving into the shorter moniker he is known by today.

As his career progressed, he also became associated with other nicknames, including The Ninja, the Gafa and the Extra-terrestrial.

Over time, the names became part of his public identity as he built a reputation in Zimbabwe’s music industry.

Winky D’s Journey Into Music

The musician’s interest in reggae began when he was still a child, collecting tapes before venturing into performances at small functions and sound clashes at the age of 16.

Those early experiences introduced him to the realities of performing and helped him understand that talent alone was not enough to sustain a career in music.

“Reggae and dancehall offered a language for struggle, confidence, humour and celebration,” he said.

Growing up in Kambuzuma, Harare, also shaped his musical outlook, exposing him to the everyday experiences and challenges that would later influence his work.

How Zimdancehall Developed Its Own Identity

With more than two decades in the industry, Winky D has witnessed Zimdancehall grow from a genre heavily influenced by Jamaican dancehall into a distinct Zimbabwean sound.

Local languages, street slang, humour and the realities of everyday life have helped musicians adapt those influences to their own audiences.

Winky D singled out Killer T, the late Soul Jah Love and Enzo Ishall as artists who have contributed to the genre’s growth, each bringing a different style and perspective.

He also encouraged younger musicians to establish their own identities while staying connected to the people and experiences that inspire their music.

The veteran artist believes every generation has something new to offer and that musicians must continue evolving while creating work that resonates with their audiences.
