Marry Mubaiwa Walks Free As Attempted Murder Trial Against VP Chiwenga Collapses

Marry Mubaiwa has been acquitted on charges of attempting to murder her ex-husband, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, after a Harare magistrate ruled that the case had dragged on for too long. The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Cites Unreasonable Delay In Chiwenga Attempted Murder Case

Harare Regional Magistrate Musaiona Shortgame acquitted the wheelchair-bound Mubaiwa after finding that the lengthy period the case had taken to conclude had prejudiced her. Mubaiwa had been accused of attempting to kill Chiwenga in July 2019 while he was hospitalised in Pretoria, South Africa.

Mubaiwa Lost Marriage, Children And Limbs During Legal Battle

The acquittal comes after Mubaiwa lost almost everything during the seven-year legal fight. She lost her marriage to Chiwenga, access to her children, her right arm and left leg to amputation, as well as money and property. She was arrested in December 2019 and has faced multiple legal battles since, including a marriage forgery conviction in April 2022 and an acquittal for assaulting her maid in October 2022.

Lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa Hailed After Acquittal

Outside court, Mubaiwa praised her lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa. According to ZimLive, she said:

“We won. Ms B has done a lot of work. She’s done very well. It’s been unfair, but today we got justice. I’m so proud of her.”

The State had applied to postpone the trial to 25 November to allow the prosecution time to engage witnesses, but the magistrate refused. Shortgame said Mubaiwa had suffered mental, physical and financial prejudice during the proceedings, now in their seventh year.

The acquittal closes one chapter of a long-running saga that has gripped Zimbabwe. Mubaiwa still faces other charges, including money laundering and exchange control violations.
