A farming preparation exercise ended in tragedy in Manicaland after a 54-year-old man died in a veld fire in Rusape.
Charles Saha lost his life on 22 October in Karani Village, leaving his family devastated.
Fire Traps Rusape Farmer While Clearing Land
Saha had left home at around 3 pm to prepare his field for the upcoming farming season.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesman Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said Saha informed his wife, Pindukai Timire, 54, about his plans.
According to police, Saha intended to clear the land and burn plant residue before planting.
However, the fire quickly spread beyond his control after he ignited it in the field.
Timire rushed to the scene when she noticed the growing flames. Tragically, she found her husband dead.
Police Warn Residents About Dangerous Veld Fires
Following the incident, Timire reported the death to Rusape Rural Police Station.
Police officers subsequently visited the scene and arranged for Saha’s body to be taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary.
Authorities will conduct a post-mortem examination as part of the investigations.
Meanwhile, police have urged residents to exercise extreme caution when burning vegetation during the hot season.
Dry grass, rising temperatures and windy conditions can cause fires to spread rapidly. Consequently, uncontrolled burning poses serious risks to farmers and surrounding communities.
Residents should take appropriate precautions when clearing land to prevent further loss of life.
