Stranded Students  Who Missed Exams to Sit as “Pirate Candidates” After President Mnangagwa Pays Exam Fees

Over 30 students from Findale School in Eastview, Harare, who missed their Ordinary Level exams, have been given a lifeline. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid their exam fees after the school owner allegedly misused the funds.

The learners, who were left stranded earlier this week, will now sit for their remaining exams as “pirate candidates.” The announcement was made during a visit by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Honourable Torerai Moyo, to the school on Wednesday.

Speaking during the visit, Minister Moyo expressed gratitude for the President’s timely action.   As per ZBC, the Minister said,

“I want to thank His Excellency for rescuing these learners,” he said. “Their right to education was violated through this theft. We are going to take measures against schools that are operating illegally.”

Minister Moyo also highlighted the growing problem of unregistered schools and promised that the government would act against these institutions.

“The proliferation of unregistered schools is a challenge, and we will be cracking down on those operating without proper licences,” he added.

Pirate Candidates Ready to Write

ZIMSEC Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lazarus Nembaware, confirmed that arrangements had been made for the students to write their remaining exams.

“We are putting everything in place so they can start writing tomorrow. They will sit as pirate candidates, and their results will be made public,” he said.

The affected students and their families were overjoyed at the news. One student, speaking to ZBC News, said, “I am happy we can finally write. I had lost hope, but now I see our President really cares about us.”
