ZRP Warns Pedestrians Against Jaywalking As Police Tighten Traffic Enforcement
Pedestrians crossing roads at undesignated points in Harare’s Central Business District risk arrest as the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) intensifies enforcement of traffic regulations.
Police have urged people to use zebra crossings, traffic lights and other designated crossing points, warning that jaywalking not only violates existing laws but also puts lives at risk.
The warning comes as authorities move to strengthen road safety measures, including plans to introduce a Points Demerit System that could see repeat traffic offenders lose their driving licences.

Pedestrians Risk Arrest for Jaywalking
Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said pedestrians must comply with road crossing regulations, particularly in Harare’s busy city centre, where reckless crossing contributes to traffic congestion and exposes people to danger.
Nyathi also called on the Harare City Council to support police enforcement efforts to reduce traffic offences and prevent loss of life.
Repeat Traffic Offenders Could Lose Licences
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development is working towards introducing a Points Demerit System under which motorists would accumulate penalties for traffic violations.
Speaking at CID Headquarters in Harare, Nyathi said drivers who repeatedly break traffic rules could eventually have their licences withdrawn under the proposed system.
Motorists Given 14 Days to Respond to Offence Notices
Nyathi also outlined the procedure for motorists issued with traffic offence notices.
Drivers will have seven days to respond to the notices, followed by another seven days to appear before the courts. Those who fail to comply risk having warrants of arrest issued against them.
Assistant Commissioner Gomo said police officers deployed on the roads would use communication radios linked to a technical support team to follow up on suspected offenders captured by Electronic Traffic Management System cameras.
