Journalist Blessed Mhlanga Granted Bail After Two Months In Remand

HStv journalist Blessed Mhlanga has been granted bail after two months in remand. Since his arrest two months ago, the journalist had been denied bail three times.

According to social media posts by Newsday, Blessed Mhlanga finally won his bid for bail today. The court set the journalist’s bail at US$500.

Blessed Mhlanga’s Previous Bail Denials

The Journalist had already been denied bail three times. Even when he applied for bail citing examinations, the courts still denied him.

In the previous weeks, it was reported that Blessed Mhlanga was bedridden and not feeling well while in remand.

High Court Justice Gibson Mandaza rejected his bail appeal, Blessed Mhlanga inciting public unrest. He shared that the journalist would cause public unrest if he were released.

Blessed Mhlanga was arrested in February after interviewing former war veteran Blessed Geza. In the interview, Blessed Geza called for protests all over the country and for the current president to step down from power.

Blessed Mhlanga turned himself in after the police called for his arrest. Ever since then, he has been held in remand awaiting his trial. The police have also called for Blessed Geza’s arrest after he incited public protests in March and called for more stay-aways.

Many Zimbabweans are celebrating Blessed Mhlanga after he is finally being granted bail. Netizens have shared their relief for the journalist and his family after the court’s ruling.
