Government warns schools to adopt Heritage-Based Curriculum or face closure

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo has warned schools against rejecting Zimbabwe’s Heritage-Based Curriculum.

He said authorities will shut down any school that refuses to implement the programme.

The minister delivered the warning during the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) conference in Victoria Falls.

Zimbabwe will introduce its first public examinations under the Heritage-Based Curriculum in 2026.

Meanwhile, officials expect every school to fully adopt the curriculum by 2027.

The curriculum promotes practical learning alongside traditional academic subjects.

It focuses on agriculture, entrepreneurship, technical education, ICT, innovation, and vocational skills.

Government believes these areas will strengthen industrialisation and drive national economic development.

Schools must comply with national curriculum

Moyo made it clear that all schools must follow the government’s education policy.

He stressed that refusing to adopt the curriculum would have serious consequences.

“Whoever decides not to… we will close the school. The curriculum is determined by the ruling government,” Moyo said.

He also addressed concerns about international examination systems operating in Zimbabwe.

According to Moyo, the government still welcomes Cambridge International Education.

However, he insisted that it cannot replace Zimbabwe’s official curriculum.

“Cambridge is welcome, but it cannot substitute the Heritage-Based Curriculum. Every school operating in Zimbabwe must first comply with the national curriculum,” he said.

Minister urges schools to protect learners’ right to education

Furthermore, Moyo reminded schools that education remains a constitutional right for every Zimbabwean child.

He urged school authorities to avoid excluding learners from classes.

Specifically, he said unpaid school fees should never prevent children from accessing education.

The government expects all schools to comply while ensuring every learner remains in the classroom.
