Zimbabwe is rolling out a high-tech upgrade to its immigration system—and it’s changing how travellers move through the country’s borders.

Chief immigration officer Respect Gono has revealed how new features on the Zimbabwean e-passport are being integrated with cutting-edge technology to make border control faster and more efficient.

Speaking to The Sunday Mail, Gono said that travellers holding Zimbabwean e-passports can now pass through certain ports of entry without speaking to an immigration officer—thanks to e-gates equipped with facial recognition and biometric scanners.

If there’s any mismatch, however, the gate locks automatically, and an officer steps in to handle the situation.

Where Are E-Gates Located in Zimbabwe?

The system is already active at major ports of entry: seven e-gates are in use at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, one at Victoria Falls Airport, two at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, and four at Beitbridge Border Post.

So far, only Zimbabwean e-passport holders can use the e-gates, but Gono said the system will soon be expanded to include eligible residence permit holders and foreign nationals.

This system—modelled after Dubai’s world-leading Smart Gates platform—is a first of its kind in the region. Like Dubai, Zimbabwe’s setup aims to make the immigration process faster, contactless, and more secure using biometric and facial recognition technology.
