Train Hits ZRP Mahindra Truck in Gweru: NRZ Shares Details

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) vehicle was struck by a train in Gweru on Tuesday, 13 May, after the officer behind the wheel allegedly failed to stop at a level crossing.

According to a statement released by the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) on Tuesday evening, the incident happened near the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID). The ZRP Mahindra truck was hit by a train wagon.

The NRZ blamed the crash on the police officer’s failure to follow traffic regulations. In simple terms, they say the driver didn’t stop where he was supposed to.

“The incident occurred when the police officer driving the vehicle failed to stop at the level crossing as required by the rules,” the statement reads.

This is not the first time such an accident has happened. The NRZ reminded the public that this is the second collision involving a ZRP vehicle this year, pointing to a similar incident in January with a police-driven Ford Ranger.

The rail operator used the occasion to issue a stern reminder to all drivers, especially law enforcement officers, to respect level crossing protocols.

“We urge all drivers, including police officers, to exercise extreme caution at road/rail crossings. Always come to a complete stop, check for approaching trains, and proceed with caution. Never attempt to race a train,” the statement concludes.

Meanwhile, The Sunday Mail earlier reported that there were two police officers in the Mahindra truck at the time of the crash. However, the NRZ did not provide any details about the condition of the driver or the passenger, and the ZRP had yet to issue an official statement by the time of publication.
