NRZ has finally addressed the viral photos of a durawall constructed on a railway line that has been circulating on social media.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has issued an official statement following widespread social media speculation about a security wall erected on what appeared to be an active railway line.
Background of the Controversy
Over the weekend, multiple images circulated online showing a newly constructed wall obstructing a rail path, sparking public outcry and numerous inquiries directed at the NRZ.

NRZ Finally Addresses Durawall Built On Railway
After conducting thorough investigations, NRZ officials confirmed that the structure was built on a decommissioned private railway siding that previously serviced a now-defunct factory.
The NRZ went on a fact-finding mission and established that the structure in question was built on top of a disused, privately-owned siding leading to a now defunct factory which is currently being demolished after the property was bought by a Chinese-owned company last year.
The property at 44 Tilbury Road in Harare’s Willowvale industrial zone was privately purchased by a Chinese company in 2022. The current owners are demolishing existing structures as part of redevelopment plans.
These sidings are owned by private companies that require goods to be railed to their premises from our yards. The wall was built to secure the property located on 44 Tilbury Rd in the Willowvale industrial area of Harare.
Property Owner’s Statement
Company director Ms. Li explained to NRZ representatives why the security measure was implemented.
Our team managed to speak to a director at the company identified as Ms Li, who said they built the security wall to prevent thieves from accessing their newly acquired property.
The NRZ emphasized that they maintain no operational authority over privately owned sidings, especially those no longer in commercial use. However, they confirmed that municipal authorities from the City of Harare have initiated their own review of the construction.
