Last week’s Mbare Magaba Market fire has caused substantial financial losses, with preliminary assessments estimating damages between US$16K and $20K according to local authorities.Harare City Council’s SME Committee Chair, Councillor Denford Ngadziore, revealed that the committee is currently documenting the incident details before presenting a formal report to the full council.

“Compensation for affected traders remains a possibility we’re carefully considering,” stated Clr Ngadziore during a recent interview

Safety Overhaul Planned for Market

The committee has scheduled an emergency meeting next week to implement critical safety upgrades at the market. These measures include finalising long-pending lease agreements. The city will also install fire hydrants throughout the market and create designated zones for flammable goods.

The City of Harare plans to develop a comprehensive vendor code of conduct. They also plan to ensure that every vendor is accounted for and has a lease agreement with the council.

Initial investigations suggest the blaze may have started from a carelessly discarded cigarette.

“We’re implementing strict regulations about smoking in the market area to prevent similar incidents,” Ngadziore explained during his assessment visit to the damaged site.

Firefighters successfully contained the flames, preventing further destruction to adjacent market sections. The committee emphasises that the new safety measures will focus on adequately storing flammable materials like paints and thinners, separating them from general merchandise areas.

This incident follows after the Mbare vegetable market was also gutted by fire last year. The vegetable market has since been constructed and renovated, and vendors are now operating again. Mbare Magaba market may be facing the same fate of a new look and overhaul.
