Train Derails After Lorry Crash In Third Collision In Two Weeks

Train derails after being hit by car in third collision inside two weeks

A train derailed in Kadoma late last night after a sand-laden lorry smashed into it — marking the third train-vehicle collision in just two weeks.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) confirmed the crash happened at 23:50hrs at a rail/road level crossing. The incident caused the last two wagons of the train to derail.

“Indications are that the driver of the vehicle lost control of the vehicle as it approached the level crossing at 2350hrs,”

Driver & passenger jump out before impact

According to NRZ, the driver and his passenger leapt out of the moving lorry moments before it ploughed into the train.

“On realising this, the driver and his passenger jumped off the truck and left it to ram into the last two wagons of the passing train,”
NRZ official statement

The two were taken to hospital but have since been discharged.

“The two men were rushed to hospital where they were treated and discharged.”

Public frustration grows after third crash

The incident has ignited a public outcry, with many pointing fingers at NRZ for failing to improve safety at level crossings. Online reactions were swift and sharp.

“You can’t play the blame game with every single accident. Residents have been complaining about the crossings for years now,”

Another user added:

“It’s high time to ensure that speed humps are constructed on all roads that cross railway lines… big humps, 5 big humps,”
@giftmun

Others questioned the condition of the crossing and demanded accountability.

“Check your own profile. You’ve been posting about nothing except accidents since last year. A shame on you NRZ,”
@SiyanaiH

‘Never race a train,’ NRZ warns again

This Kadoma crash follows two other serious rail collisions this May.

On May 21, six people were hospitalised after a Honda Fit tried to beat a train at a Harare level crossing at 1AM. And just last week, a ZRP vehicle was also hit by a train in Gweru.

NRZ has continued to urge drivers to be more cautious.

“We keep urging drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching all level crossings and avoid using defective vehicles,”
NRZ statement

Calls are growing louder for the NRZ and relevant authorities to install better safety systems, working lights, and physical barriers at level crossings.
