South African Women Lead the World in Curviness: Full Rankings Revealed
South African women have been crowned as having the curviest figures in the world, according to research conducted by market research company GitNux. The study analyzed the average hip size of women in different countries, which is often an indicator of the size of their buttocks. South Africa claimed the top spot with an average hip size of 47.13 inches (119.71 cm), which was well ahead of second-placed Argentina with 41 inches and Sweden with 40.9 inches.
Surprisingly, no other African country made the top ten for women with the curviest figures in the world.
Detailed Global Rankings:
The complete list from the GitNux survey not only highlights the diversity but also sparks discussions about regional body types:
- South Africa: 47.13 inches (119.71 cm)
- Argentina: 41 inches (104.14 cm)
- Sweden: 40.9 inches (103.86 cm)
- Greece: 40.74 inches (103.48 cm)
- Germany: 40.6 inches (103.12 cm)
- USA: 40.2 inches (102.11 cm)
- Russia: 40.55 inches (103 cm)
- Italy: 40.55 inches (103 cm)
- Australia: 40.5 inches (102.87 cm)
- Netherlands: 40.25 inches (102.24 cm)
- France: 40.25 inches (102.24 cm)
- Canada: 40.3 inches (102.36 cm)
- Nigeria: 38.65 inches (98.17 cm)
- South Korea: 38 inches (96.52 cm)
- Japan: 37.8 inches (96.01 cm)
The African Conundrum:
While South Africa leads the chart, the rankings of the curviest women in the world reveal a notably poor representation from other African nations, with only Nigeria making the top 15 at 38.65 inches (98.17 cm). This stark contrast raises questions about regional variations in genetics, lifestyle, diet, and health.
The Evolutionary Significance of Bigger Buttocks
Research suggests that humans evolved to have larger buttocks compared to other mammals because we primarily walk on two legs.
A study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior found that men are mostly attracted to women with a 45-degree curvature from their back to their buttocks.
This spinal structure allowed pregnant women to balance their weight over their hips, making them more effective at foraging during pregnancy and less likely to suffer spinal injuries.
Men who preferred these women would have had mates who were better able to provide for their offspring, leading to the evolution of bigger buttocks as a desirable trait.
Darcy Shapiro, an evolutionary anthropologist, discusses the biological advantages of larger hips.
“In human evolution, larger hips signify not just attractiveness but also are indicative of a woman’s ability to bear children more effectively,” Shapiro notes.
The preference for larger buttocks is believed to stem from these evolutionary benefits, signalling youth and fertility.
Factors Influencing Buttock Size
A wide array of factors can influence the size of a woman’s buttocks, including bone density, genetics, diet, overall weight, and activity levels.
In South Africa, the high percentage of the population being black (81.4%) has been suggested as a possible reason for larger bone structure, though this is still debated.
Additionally, more than 68% of women in South Africa are overweight or obese, which may partly explain their large average hip size.
Contrastingly, the low ranking of other African nations like Nigeria suggests different health and nutritional patterns across the continent.
Plastic Surgery and Indigenous Population Influence
Argentina, which ranked second for curviest women, has a reputation as a plastic surgery hub. The country performed nearly 400,000 plastic surgeries in 2021.
Argentina also has a large population of Indigenous and mixed-race Indigenous people, who are more genetically likely to have excess fat and tissues around the buttocks and thighs.
Sweden, known for tall and slim bodies, surprisingly had the third-largest hip size. About 50% of adults in Sweden are overweight or obese, and the rate of obesity has been steadily increasing since 2004.
Plastic surgery, including buttock-enhancing procedures, has also seen a 15% year-over-year increase in the country.
India’s Slender Hips and Smaller Bone Structure
India ranked last in terms of average hip size, with an average of 36.1 inches. This could be attributed to factors such as lower obesity rates and smaller bone structure among Indian women compared to white or black women.
Global Surprises and Insights:
The absence of Brazil, known for its celebration of curvy bodies, and the lower rankings of the US and UK, challenge common stereotypes and invite a reevaluation of global beauty standards.
Sweden’s position as third, debunking the stereotype of tall, slim figures, suggests shifting body norms or perhaps rising health issues like obesity.
This data not only celebrates the diversity of female body shapes globally but also highlights significant health and cultural implications. ”
Understanding these global patterns helps us address health disparities and redefine beauty standards in a more inclusive way,” adds Dr. Emily Swanson, a global health researcher.
