Donald Trump Bans 12 Countries Including African Nations From Travelling to US: Here’s the Full List

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new travel ban restricting entry from 12 countries and partially limiting travel from seven others. He cited threats to national security.

The travel ban is set to take effect on Monday, 9 June at 12:01 AM (05:01 BST).

“Common Sense Restrictions” to Protect Americans

According to a statement from the White House seen by BBC News, the travel ban is aimed at shielding Americans from what it describes as “dangerous foreign actors.”

The proclamation calls the measures “common sense restrictions” intended to guard national security.

There are threats emerging around the world,” President Trump said, adding that the list of countries could be revised if “material improvements” are made, or expanded should new threats arise.

12 Countries Face Full Travel Ban

The travel ban targets nationals from the following 12 countries, who are now barred from entering the United States:

  • Afghanistan

  • Myanmar

  • Chad

  • Congo-Brazzaville

  • Equatorial Guinea

  • Eritrea

  • Haiti

  • Iran

  • Libya

  • Somalia

  • Sudan

  • Yemen

Partial Restrictions on Seven Additional Nations

In addition to the 12 fully restricted countries, the U.S. will also impose partial travel restrictions on nationals from seven other nations:

  • Burundi

  • Cuba

  • Laos

  • Sierra Leone

  • Togo

  • Turkmenistan

  • Venezuela

The nature of these partial restrictions has not yet been fully detailed, but the White House said they would be tailored based on “specific security shortcomings” identified by U.S. intelligence.

Echoes of Trump’s 2017 Travel Ban

This is not the first time Trump has imposed such restrictions. In 2017, during his first term in office, he signed a controversial order barring entry from seven Muslim-majority countries. That measure drew swift legal challenges and protests across the nation.

This time, officials say the administration has implemented a cushion period to avoid the kind of airport chaos that followed the 2017 announcement. The current order will be reviewed periodically, although no end date has been set.
