Harare’s New Street Names Confuse Residents: Full List Inside
The City of Harare has reminded residents of major road name changes—sparking confusion, criticism, and comedy online.
In a Facebook post published on 5 June 2025, the city reposted a list of renamed streets under the campaign “Know Your City for Easy Driving.” The road names were officially changed in 2019, but signage remains missing on many roads—leaving motorists, delivery drivers, and pedestrians scratching their heads.
“All these roads still bear the old names. How come you have not changed the road signs?” asked News of The South.
Others were more direct.
“Just name it the ‘City of ZANU PF’ once!” wrote Kuda Matiza.
“New names, same potholes,” added Prince Tough Mupindu.

Harare residents push back
Many social media users rejected the changes outright.
“Guaranteed we are not going to use even 1 of these
Angwa is Angwa, Second is Second, Innez is Innez,” said Tinomutenda Chifamba.
“Sir Seretse Khama Road in Zimbabwe
,” wrote Profshue Leo, while another added, “Just construct new roads and give them your silly names.”
Others expressed concern over priorities.
“Is this what you meant by a world-class city by 2025?” asked Steven Kayamba.
“You’re renaming roads while they’re crumbling beneath our feet?” added Promise Matope.
Some pointed out that new names only add confusion—especially for visitors and digital navigation.
“If it’s not on Google Maps, we don’t know it,” quipped Tatenda Shanel Sithole.
“Better to remain with old names or we rename them back in a new Zimbabwe,” said Ish Manyere.
A city stuck between maps and memories
While the City of Harare’s intentions may have been symbolic, the reality on the ground remains unchanged. Many still refer to the roads by their colonial or pre-2019 names—highlighting a gap between policy and public acceptance.
Whether the city erects signage or not, most Harareans appear to be sticking to what they know best—the old names.
