Chamisa explained that cybercriminals had gained unauthorised access to his account and that he had immediately brought in a team of experts to help recover it. He assured his followers that the matter was being handled and that updates would be shared as progress is made. The announcement shared by Chamisa read:
“To my fellow citizens, I wish to kindly inform you that my X (formerly Twitter) account has been hacked and compromised by cybercriminals. Our cybersecurity team is working diligently with X support team to fix this problem, regain control and implement remedial measures. We will keep you updated on the status of the account recovery and any actions being taken.~nc”
However, Chamisa did not give details on how the account was hacked, leaving many wondering how the breach happened.

Not the First High-Profile Hacking Incident
Previously, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume had his WhatsApp account hijacked. That incident revealed some of the tactics hackers are using.
In Mafume’s case, the cybercriminal impersonated former Minister Walter Mzembi and sent WhatsApp messages to well-known figures like journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and entrepreneur Kuda Musasiwa. The hacker pretended to be part of an online ambassador program and asked for support in the form of a vote.
Instead of a voting link, the hacker told them to expect a code and to send that code back. It turned out that this was a WhatsApp verification code, which the hacker then used to take over Mafume’s account and access his contacts.
